Understand how people find your business online and track your progress in Google search results.
What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving your website so it appears higher in Google search results when people look for services like yours. A well-optimized site means more visitors without paying for ads.
Business Details & Local SEO
For local SEO to work, Smart Websites needs to know your business type and location. These are set on your website's detail page under Business Details.
- Business type — The category that best describes your business (e.g., Plumber, Dentist, Bakery).
- Location — The city, county, or region where you serve clients.
Once set, the dashboard shows your estimated monthly search volume — the number of people searching for your type of business in your area each month.
Search Volume
Shown on your website's detail page, Potential monthly traffic is an estimate of how many people search for your business type in your area each month. The higher the number, the more visitors you could attract with good rankings.
Ranking Data
Once your site is live and Google has indexed it, you'll see estimated impressions and clicks:
- Impressions — How many times your site appeared in search results.
- Clicks — How many times someone clicked through to your site.
It typically takes a few weeks after launch for your site to start appearing in Google results. Rankings improve over time as Google builds trust in your site.
ROI Calculator
The SEO ROI Calculator estimates the financial value of ranking at the top of Google for your business type and location — comparing it to the cost of paid advertising to earn the same traffic organically.
Access it via the link on your website's detail page or navigate to SEO ROI Calculator from the app.
Page-Level SEO Settings
Each page has its own SEO settings, accessible from the page editor. Click SEO Settings at the top of the sidebar to set:
- SEO Title — Appears in Google search results and the browser tab. Keep it under 60 characters and include your main keyword.
- Meta Description — A 150–160 character summary shown below your title in search results. Write a compelling description that encourages clicks.

If you'd rather have SEO handled for you, our SEO Services offering provides professional optimization and content strategy. From your website detail page, follow the What does this mean? link or navigate to SEO Services in the app to learn more.
SEO Tips for Better Rankings
- Publish quality content. Write pages that genuinely answer questions your customers are searching for.
- Use your keywords naturally. Include your business type and location in headings and body text, but don't over-do it.
- Keep your site fast. Smart Websites uses static hosting, which loads extremely fast — a major ranking factor.
- Get local listings. Claim your Google Business Profile and ensure your name, address, and phone number match your website exactly.
- Be patient. SEO results take time — typically 3–6 months to see meaningful ranking improvement.
Why isn't my site appearing in Google yet?
New sites take time to be indexed. Google typically discovers and indexes new sites within a few weeks. You can speed this up by submitting your sitemap (/sitemap.xml) through Google Search Console.
What's the difference between impressions and clicks?
An impression is counted every time your site appears in a search result, even if the user doesn't click. A click is counted when the user actually visits your site. The ratio (clicks ÷ impressions) is your click-through rate (CTR).
